The Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most iconic buildings in the world and, since I can see it from my hotel if I look out and turn me head all the way (I mean ALL the way) to the left, I figured it was a good of a place as any to start getting to know the city. I won't bore you with all of the details about these wonderful buildings (there are actually two distinct buildings) -- though those of you looking to broaden your horizons, you can do so by clicking here -- but I will share a few interesting facts:

  • It was built between 1957 and 1973 at a cost of just over $100 million (doesn't sound bad until you discover that the original budget was just $7 million.
  • It was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon
  • It was added to the World Heritage list in 2007
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger was named Mr. Olympia here in 1980
The pictures speak for themselves...

Unfortunately, even though I shelled out $35 for the hour-long tour, they didn't let us take pictures inside of anything interesting.
